I love this time of year. I love Christmas and I love winter. This year has been especially great because it’s been cool. Nothing kills the holiday spirit like 80 degree weather. So, I’ve been listening to a satellite radio station that is playing traditional Christmas music. It’s great, all the corny old Christmas songs from the 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. Songs like “Would you like to Have Christmas on Christmas Island?,” “Over the River and Through the Woods to Grandmother’s House”,” and who could forget the classic, “Dominic, the Italian Christmas Donkey.”
Another song that is played a lot, performed by many different people is, “I Need a Little Christmas.” That one really makes me smile. I sometimes think that I need a little Christmas— like when I was five and didn’t have to worry about a thing except what present to open first. No other worries or responsibilities or problems. Those were the days.
I also love the traditional Christmas movies played this time of year. Nothing made recently can compare with Miracle on 34th Street (the original), A Christmas Carole (with Patrick Stewart), and my absolute favorite, The Three Godfathers. (God bless John Wayne)
And usually, this time of year, people are nicer, more pleasant, as long as they aren’t waiting to be offended by Merry Christmas. (I am personally offended by Happy Holidays, I mean, what holiday? Ramadan?) I love the smell of Christmas tress, the sparkle of tinsel, and lots of snow in the mountains.
My favorite Christmas Bible verse, Luke 2:8-14 “That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them . They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” He said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savior, yes the Messiah, the Lord, has been born today in Bethlehem, the City of David. And you will recognize him by this sign: You will find a baby wrapped snugly in strips of cloth, lying in a manger.” Suddenly the angel was joined by a vast host of others, the armies of Heaven, praising God and saying: “Glory to God in highest heaven, and peace on earth to those with whom God is pleased.” NLT
Thank God for our Savior, Jesus Christ. And a very Merry Christmas to everyone.
I too enjoy this time of the year but I seem to enjoy it less each season as the true meaning of Christmas is continually being eroded away while the commercial value of Christmas is being increased. Seeing the Wise Men always displayed in the manger scenes is a reminder to me how we don’t know Scripture. Scripture indicates the Wise Men did not arrive until about two years after the birth of Messiah and by that time He was living in a house, not a manger or cave.
For me as a Christian, Christmas is a reminder of my God loving me so much that He sent His son to be born of a virgin so that He may be the perfect sacrifice so that I might live eternally with Him.
Christmas is also a reminder of Hanukkah which I also will be celebrating. John 10:22-23 implies Yeshua celebrated Hanukkah and as one who attends a Messianic congregation of Jewish and Gentile followers of Yeshua this evening marks the lighting of the menorah starting with the Shamash candle. Yeshua is represented by the Shamash candle which gives light to us and is used to light the other candles. Yeshua is the light unto all nations and peoples.
